Each year at this time I have the honor and privilege of recognizing some of our outstanding students with the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents’ Award.
The Superintendents’ Award Recognition Program was originated by the Public Information Committee of the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents about 15 years ago. Held in November, these awards provide the superintendents in the State of Connecticut an opportunity to recognize student leaders and achievers.
In order to ensure high and rigorous selectivity, the distribution formula is quite restrictive, allowing for one award for every 250 students, or two awards per school in the Windsor Locks Public Schools. The recognition of the students chosen is based upon:
South Elementary:Adriana Pelletier and Christopher Bulat, Jr.
Windsor Locks Middle School:Sarah Onley and Mathew Shaw
Windsor Locks High School:Julie DellaGuistina and Samuel Rhodes
Congratulations!
Students in Windsor Locks were honored for their academic performance on the 2011 Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) and Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) at the Board of Education meeting held on October 13, 2011. Students in grades three through eight and grade ten were recognized for their achievement at the Advanced level (highest level) on all three/four of the subtests of Math, Reading, Writing and Science on the State assessments. It is an accomplishment when a student achieves the Advanced status on one of the academic areas, however, these students have distinguished themselves among Connecticut school children by achieving the Advanced level on all of the subtests. Mission Statement
The WLPS will create and sustain a community of life-long learners where all students are engaged, empowered and expected to achieve at the highest levels and to become responsible, contributing citizens in an ever-changing, global society.
The Windsor Locks Public Schools Food Service Director and Executive Chef David Mensher, along with Kim Chmura and other food services staff delighted the residents of the emergency shelter with a Thanksgiving meal complete with a turkey carving station, and all the trimmings.
Although most of the town’s residents have been coping without power, over 100 Windsor Locks residents made WLHS, the town’s emergency shelter, home at one point. Individuals in the shelter shared warm accommodations, a hot meal, internet capabilities, and new friends according to Superintendent Wayne Sweeney. “While conditions outside were unbearable, for a few folks the gym was a comfortable place that created an atmosphere of caring. In spite of it all there was much to give thanks for” said Superintendent Sweeney.
The food services staff and countless volunteers serving the center could feel the sense of community and determined it would be appropriate to provide the shelter residence a Pre-Thanksgiving dinner.
