Before settling on a topic or question to research, be sure to browse what is available to you.

You want to make sure that you choose the right research topic, as you will probably be spending a lot of time and energy learning about the topic.

What should I Research?:

When you begin thinking about choosing a topic, there are various methods to use to get you started.

  1. What interests you?  What would you like to learn more about?

Some questions to consider:

  1. Why is your project interesting/important to you? To your community? To the world?

  2. What about your project sparks your curiosity and creativity?

2. Browse: Start with the databases

  1. Begin with looking at the titles of the database, which general areas of study interest you?

  2. Once you log in to a database, scan through the topics page.  See anything that interests you?

  3. Try a search.  Type in one or two words that summarize your topics of interest. See what you come up with.

  4. Search: Search your library's catalog! Put in key words.  Then when you find something of interest, do a call number search to find similar resources.

And don't worry about making it perfect.  You can always change or alter your topic as you go.

Use the "Potential Topics for Inquiry" worksheet provided below to keep track of interesting topics.
